Pig City video installation will be shown as part of Eco-Visionaries: Art, Architecture and New Media after the Anthropocene MAAT’s first collaboration with several European museums opening on 11th April 2018. 

Eco-Visionaries launches the debate on a vast array of questions associated to the Anthropocene – the recent designation for a geological period defined by the impact of human action. With contributions from over thirty-five artists and architects, the show in Lisbon is the first and most wide-ranging of the four exhibitions that will appear simultaneously in Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden.

Pig City was a study on pig Farming density following the 2000 report that pork was the most consumed form of meat at 80 billion kg per year.

Recent animal diseases such as Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth disease raised serious questions about pork production and consumption. Two opposing reactions can be imagined. Either we change our consumption pattern and become instant vegetarians or a change in the production methods and demand biological farming.

Pig City was the next step in MVRDV's research into how, in the future, The Netherlands will be able to tackle the problem of space in the light of the continuing rise in population. The project was first shown at Stroom Den Haag in 2001.
