Memorable Experiences
Interiors
At MVRDV we believe in better, healthier, greener urban environments – but the fact remains that people spend an average of 90% of their time indoors. That’s why we also create interior designs that are inspiring yet functional, lively yet chic, vibrant, playful, diverse, social, innovative, and transformative. From corporate offices to collective spaces, from haute couture to rock ‘n’ roll – no matter the project scale, type, or budget, our bold approach to interiors creates experiences that people remember.
Our designs exemplify the same spirit as architecture, going beyond mere decoration and trends to adapt the bold and unexpected qualities of our buildings into smaller, human-scaled interior projects. In works such as the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and our own office the MVRDV House, we transform the inside of existing buildings, inserting bright modern additions that nevertheless respect the building’s architectural heritage and capitalise on the unique qualities of the historical structures.
While others may see interior designs as an opportunity to create a world unto itself, our designs reach outside of themselves, becoming embedded into their context to offer value to the surrounding community. The Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement is an intricate network of play-spaces that functions as a continuation of the exterior landscape, inviting people inside to engage in the building’s mission of health, culture, leisure, and education.
Our interiors team also specialises in translating brand identities into architectural experiences, in projects such as our ongoing collaboration with Bvlgari. Using thoughtful interpretation of a the history of a company or building, as well as the creation of experimental materials – from a transparent brick façade to artificial marble that glows with veins of gold light – we have made retail experiences that are as finely crafted as the boutique products sold inside them.
And what is an interior without the furnishings and objects that give it life? From carpets to ceiling lamps, and furniture for humans and pets alike, we have created furniture and objects that make an unexpected and exciting addition to any interior. Much more than just visually interesting objects, these small designs are often a condensation our ideas about the world at large. For example the Puzzle Carpet, a patchwork made by reusing waste materials from the manufacture of other carpets, demonstrates our belief in sustainability while the Infinity Kitchen forecasts a future of radical transparency.
